about

a song for a rainy day is the debut album from Calgarian musician Ariel Ulysses. The artist's style of ambient and drone is still prevalent and at the forefront, but affected in some way on each track. Heavier emphasis on microcassette recordings, elements of post-rock, dream pop and a sprinkle of noise, and much longer songs encompass the bulk of the album's tracklist.

Each song was recorded between January and March 2020, aside from "First and 8th". Due to the pandemic, production on the album was halted and spread out over the coming months, finally finished in August.

Album artwork assembled by Kaiden Jackman from a warped Video8 capture of a rainy evening, somewhere around late May, early June 2020.

Ariel Ulysses has this to say about the album:

Since my childhood, I've always wanted to be a musician. Growing older led to feelings of restlessness as each year would pass and nothing would get done. Songs would be written, demos would be compiled, but beyond a sort of "proof of concept" in 2018, time would pass.

After graduating high school, I went to college. The experience led to me meeting many creative and uncompromising people that really influenced my music. Their unflinching drive to create led me to believe that I should go full force into music without looking back. I dropped out a year after starting but kept in touch with the people that made me who I am.

As the year started, the songs started pouring out onto tape in the form of these slowed down, slurred experiments. I attempted to create something that evokes this sleepy, dreamy atmosphere that would feel perfect on a dark evening in the city, with drizzling rain on the pavement and softly slapping against the window. I didn't realize it in the moment but there's a good chance it was a form of escapism from a miserable Albertan winter. Instead of going outside in -40 Celsius snow-caked weather I would stay in and record, imagining what life would be like when the snow melted and I could go out and see my friends without being bundled up in snow pants and parkas.

The pandemic ended up completely screwing over production on the album from about late March to mid May. I felt defeated, depressed, like I had a lack of purpose and the project was a waste of time. Luckily my friends from college acted as some sort of grounding and convinced me to push on. The warmer temperatures probably helped as well.

This album is for all weather. The warm, the cold, the sun, the rain, and (as much as I hate to admit it) the snow. Listen if you're hanging out with friends, gridlocked at home during a blizzard, and especially if you're relaxing on a rainy day.
